Jessica O’Donoghue.
“A tour de force of dramatic range”
- Sydney Morning Herald
Jessica O’Donoghue is an artist determined to be deeply and intimately heard.
As one of Australia’s most compelling vocalists and contemporary composers, she is disrupting outdated ideas of the operatic genre, unfolding new perspectives and narratives through her genre-defying artistry.
As a composer, performer, recording artist, producer and artistic director, Jessica is igniting Australia’s art-music and contemporary opera scene from every angle. Specialising in new music, she tells living, breathing narratives that reflect modern audiences.
Jessica’s distinctive, provocative mezzo-soprano vocals bring a magnetic stage presence and soaring vocal range, delivering raw, unbridled emotion and technical brilliance. Classically trained at the University of Sydney and Victorian College of the Arts, Jessica held numerous Young Artist roles with Opera Queensland and London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden, before broadening into a genre-defying voice, crossing operatic, experimental and contemporary pop music.
“an incredibly unique, versatile and ambitious artist and composer.”
- Annabell Drumm, Sydney Arts Guide
Opera as a living, breathing art form
Across all her roles, Jessica’s work is unified by the consistent desire to share deeply compelling modern narratives, telling powerful, inspiring and fundamentally human stories. As a performer and composer, Jessica is focused on evolving the dramatic genre, amplifying the voices of women and the experiences of those often left unheard.
Jessica’s artistry – whether as a composer, performer or director – is diverse, drawing from a vast and varied repertoire. Recognised as a powerful and primal storyteller, Jessica focuses on stories deeply rooted in emotional expression, centring modern narratives and complex characters. Jessica amplifies feminine narratives, giving space to tell stories otherwise untold – serious mental illness, identity in motherhood, queer parenting, miscarriage and intergenerational trauma.
“It’s time for women to have control of the narrative
and for us to hear and witness these epic and inspiring stories and experiences loud and clear.”
Evolving the genre
Jessica’s work is fuelled by her desire to evolve the operatic genre, composing and premiering new operatic works that offer fresh energy and unique perspectives through modern stories.
Jessica’s work as a recording artist continues to break down preconceived ideas about the operatic genre, with critically acclaimed solo albums blending classical, pop, and experimental styles. Rise Up (2022), a striking fusion of classical, pop, and experimental sound worlds, was a finalist for Album of the Year at the international ProgSpace Awards. Her most recent work, undead, presents contemporary opera songs and arias in a more accessible, ‘bite sized’ format, spotlighting the raw and deeply intimate story-telling of the genre, demonstrating its relevance to modern audiences and providing the next generation of operatic singers with access to new works.
